While Intel and AMD look to make a complete jump to 8-cores, Tilera (an MIT start-up) says its upcoming 100-core chip has “at least four times the compute performance of an Intel Nehalem-Ex, while burning a third of the power.”

The 40-nanometer TILE-Gx will reportedly draw about 55W of power at full load, and though it’s expected to cost between $400 and $1000 (depending on volume), it’s more intended for use on Linux-based enterprise Web servers.

According to Wired, the chip isn’t really geared for regular operating systems such as Windows 7—for that, you’ll have to wait for Intel’s 80-core processor which was demonstrated last year, and is expected in about 5 years. [Tilera via Wired]

At just 3mm thick, Samsung’s latest 40-inch LED backlit LCD HDTV is as thin as Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV. It almost makes the 1-inch thin Panasonic Z1 Plasma look chubby, and Samsung’s current LED LCD TVs (about 1.2-inches) look fat.

All we know right now is that the model you see has a 120Hz LCD panel, and 5000:1 contrast ratio. Oh, and Samsung hopes to push it out ASAP. I bet. [Akihabara News]

It’s also apparent the laptop’s undercarriage (which holds the keyboard) folds up into a recess where the screen is. Freaky. But I like it.

Nikon’s holding a buttload of events around the world Oct. 14, meaning new camera. Specifically, it’s rumored to be the D3s—a tweaked version of the conveniently out-of-stock D3 with 1080p video recording, along with a new mystery camera.

Rumored D3s specs follow thusly

* Nikon D3s with ISO 200-12800 (D3 was with ISO 200-6400)
* New ISO range HI-3 at 102,400 ISO
* 12.1 mp FX sensor (same as the D3, but tweaked)
* 14fps
* D-movie with 24 fps/1080p

Don’t hold your breath on that ISO, but the rest is very possible. It’d make sense that a D3s would be their first DSLR to make the jump to 1080p video (we’ll honestly cry if it has 720p).

The other possible camera, which might just have us more excited is a compact with a DSLR-sized sensor inside, sorta like Leica’s X1. We’ll be waiting for Oct. 14 with bated breath, that’s for sure. [Nikon Rumors]

Good news for people with nVidia graphics cards – today, the manufacturer released its 191.07 graphics drivers for all desktop graphics cards. As with the last few releases, these drivers fully support both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

These drivers support the usual goodies for users of cards in the GeForce 8 series or above – namely, PhysX, CUDA, WDDM 1.1, and DirectCompute, a series of technologies geared toward making your graphics card do more than play the latest games.

So what? It’s just another driver release, right? Well, that in itself is remarkable, and it shows just how far ahead Windows 7 is of Windows Vista.

Windows 7’s launch is imminent (16 days an 5 hours, says our countdown clock!), but it hasn’t happened yet. Only certain business and MSDN customers have (legally) gotten their hands on finished Windows 7 code. And yet, already we’ve seen multiple Windows 7 driver releases from many manufacturers.

Dell has Windows 7 drivers available for most of their current desktop and laptop models. ATI has officially supported Windows 7 since the Catalyst 9.3 driver package was released about seven months ago, and nVidia has had Windows 7 drivers available for almost as long. Intel has released a couple of sets of beta drivers, even keeping its old, low-end GMA 950 chipset up-to-date with new drivers.

This is a far cry from Windows Vista’s driver support – some studies have said that nVidia drivers were responsible for nearly 30% of Windows Vista’s crashes the year that operating system was released. Think about that! Every four times a Windows Vista computer crashed, it was the fault of nVidia drivers. Of course, most consumers didn’t know that – for them, an operating system crash was the operating system’s fault, and Microsoft’s and Vista’s reputation suffered as a result.

The rock-solid driver support that Windows 7 is going to enjoy when it launches in two weeks is tremendous, both for users and for Microsoft. Users get a more reliable and feature-rich computer, and Microsoft’s operating system can be judged based on its own successes and failures, not the failures of another company. That’s good news for everyone.

Europe plans to launch its own rover to Mars in 2018. Here we see the Britain-built “Bridget” driving around some hole in the ground that sort of looks like Mars.

As you’ll hear in this clip, the rover is testing a new imaging system that promises to one-up that of the US-based rovers. Europe’s system should send back highly detailed 3D maps of the surface that one scientist compared to Google street view.

These maps will be useful in everything from general topographical research to colonial planning to first-person shooters. [BBC News via DVICE]

When we put on active shutter-glasses and tried Panasonic’s 103-inch 3D Plasma concept, we liked that the image flickered less than competing 3D systems from Sony and JVC. Now Panasonic has a 50-inch prototype, and hopes to sell it next-year.
